I received a virus warning while online. Is it real?

I received a virus warning while I was online. Then several pop-up windows appeared, all looking rather legitimate. Even when I tried to exit the pop-up windows there was another pop-up window encouraging me NOT to exit before I fixed the problem. Is this legitimate and if so, what should I do to scan for viruses?
