How long does the lock function last?

Hey guys,

Im trying to use ipod shuffles in a show and need to be able to cue them up. But neither the pause or lock functions seem to last much longer than ten minutes before resetting to the start of the track and the lower starting volume level.

Any ways round this?

its a 4th gen model.

I dont want to use the three way switch to lock it as the act of unlocking it with that switch seems to start play back from the start of the track and again the lower volume level.
