Downloading photos from camera Xd card direct to external disk drive

Question

I have a new Mackbook Pro plus an external Apple disk drive.

Can I download photos from a camera XD card direct to the disk drive using the Mackbook?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

Your MacBook Pro has an SDXC card slot so yo can insert the your card into that and copy the contents to an external drive.
