Read a pdf file on an Airport drive

I have a bunch of pdf files on my Airport drive that I would like to read on my iPad. Is there a way to do this? Maybe I'm being stupid or something, cause it seems like this should be easy to do, but I have not been able to figure out how to do it. Thanks for help.
