General poor running crashes and over 830 Diag reports in log

Mac Pro 3,1

OS X 10.9.5

Library/logs/Diagnostic reports over 830 reports from crash reports Shutdown Stall, cpu resource spin, wakeup crashes, this is all within a month.

Always been upgraded rather than clean install. I'd always done clean installs on my ol Windows machines, but I have been laughed at so many times on here for daring to suggest that Clean Installs are needed on a Mac, I never bothered. 2008 machine originally with 10.6.8

I'll probably have to go for a clean install but wanted a bit of input first, to see if any one can see how many things I could fix .

I have attached an EtreCheck log below.

I have already removed a few unloaded or Red items from the launch Agent sections.

Replaced thePRAM/ CMOS small backup battery

Did have a Crucial RAM failure last week...so swapped those out for older smaller original RAM.

Have stripped the machine and removed dust / fluff etc from heatsinks , and fans.

Removed and re seated all RAM, Graphic cards and the 4 x HDD's

Some of the problems I have been having are:

Failure to boot.

Having to do a PRAM reset, SMC reset or 10 second power button hold to either boot or shut down.

General Random app freezes, requiring 10 second power button to shut down ..apps like Time machine, Contacts, Mail, etc

Any ideas would be of a help

When you say "Crashes" do you mean kernel panics, requiring you to reboot?

If so, then one possibility is one of the following kernel extensions (they are running inside the kernel and have unrestricted access to everything, and in such a way that they can trigger a panic):

/Applications/DiskWarrior.app

[not loaded] com.alsoft.Preview (4.4) [Click for support]

/Applications/VMware Fusion.app

[not loaded] com.vmware.kext.vmci (90.1.1) [Click for support]

/System/Library/Extensions

[loaded] com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower (1.6.6 - SDK 10.6) [Click for support]

[not loaded] com.eltima.ElmediaPlayer.kext (1.0) [Click for support]

[not loaded] com.olympus.CamBlockCommandsDeviceUP (3.1.0 - SDK 10.6) [Click for support]

[not loaded] com.wacom.kext.wacomtablet (6.3.9 - SDK 10.9) [Click for support]

Since you have just been upgrading since 10.6, it is possible you have dragging along an old kernel extension that is not playing nice with the Mavericks kernel.

I suggest removing all the extensions you are no longer using, and then make sure the ones that remain are all up-to-date and compatible with Mavericks.

You can also boot into Safe Mode, which will not load the 3rd party kernel extensions.

<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

22GB says this is NOT all Apple RAM, so it is also possible you have a flaky RAM card (not that Apple's RAM can't fail, it is just less likely).

Rember is a front-end GUI to the 'memtest' command line memory testing program

<http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/>

Shutdown as many apps as you can when running 'Rember', so Rember can acquire access to as much RAM as possible, _AND_ specify enough passes so it runs overnight (a single pass is not sufficient).

Mar 27, 2015 10:28 AM in response to BobHarris

Hi Bob. When I say "Crashes" I only mean what ever Apple means ..as that is what it calls the reports, as seen in the Logs/ Diagnostic Logs section of the library, and as in the last section of the EtreCheck file

Even my original RAM hat came with the machine (from the iQue 'Apple Store ' reseller that I bought the Mac from) is not original Apple RAM. All the RAM is Crucial RAM. We don't have an official Apple store here in Jersey , just the iQue store.

So when ever I upgraded RAM, I continued with Crucial RAM. If not Apple RAM, at least it is all the same type, from the same seller.

Just reading up on how to remove the kernel extensions now.

I am getting around to working on the hosts file too, but been busy today setting up a Deliberant APC 5M-90v3 8km WiFI bridge link from the house to she farm stables , setting up some IP cams for security.

Here is the latest Etre Check output

EtreCheck version: 2.1.8 (121)

Mar 28, 2015 1:44 AM in response to Neil Paisnel

OK, thanks for the help. Just one piece to solve now..the VMWare kexts..but need to wait on an upgraded issue I am having wtiht the VM Ware people.

The only Etre check that shows in Red is a smbd issue...which I think is because I shut down after accessing a SMB share on another machine on the network, and the disk was mounted as s share..woudl that be correct?

Problem System Launch Daemons: ℹ️

[failed] com.apple.smbd.plist [Click for details]

I have 'Fixed' the hosts file too, for now. I do have some 'err...iffy ' software . But nothing I use. the extra entries were blocks for some expensive photo software that I use once, then went back to my original 'lite' original copies as the Pro versions were just overkill for my needs.

Remember mem test all showed good too...from what I can tell. Ran in Safe Mode. may try again in single user mode as mentioned in the text if I get a chance.

I ran one full scan, that took about 5 hours,

then set it up again to run two more passes over night, but I had to stop the second pass half way through as we needed to use the machine

Remember Test Results

All tests passed!

Total built-in memory: 22 GB

This is the total amount of physical memory that the computer has installed. If this figure is not showing the correct amount of memory there may be a problem with one or more installed DIMMS.

Available memory: 19722 MB

Available memory is the amount of physical memory that is currently not in use by any other processes. All available memory will be used for testing when the "All" option is selected. To increase the amount of available memory, you can restart your computer before testing. If you are familiar with the command line (CLI), you can run memtest (the core of Rember) in single-user mode. See Rember help, or http://www.memtestosx.org for more information.

Requested amount: All MB

The total amount of memory requested for testing by the Rember application. Not all requested memory can be allocated for testing. See information on "Available memory" for more information.

Memory allocated for testing: 19722 MB

This is the total amount of memory that memtest was able to allocate for testing. See "Available memory" section for more information.

-------

Loops selected: 1

Total loops selected by user for testing. All loops should complete when testing is successful. Test failure when the "Continue on Error" preference is selected will cancel tests before this number of loops has been completed. Users can also cancel testing before this number is reached.

Loops completed: 1

Total loops completed by memtest. Note that the Rember is not always able to identify how many loops ran. If there are discrepancies between this and the loops selected, the log should be examined to determine exactly how many loops were performed.

-------

Total execution time: All tests passed! Execution time: 18058 seconds

This is the total amount of time that it took to execute the selected tests. Execution time may vary from system to system, and is provided as a guide for determining how long users can expect tests to run based on the amount of memory installed on the system.

I think it is going to have to be a full clean re install 😟

Looking at Console app this morning, it is firing out a Crash report every 30 seconds or so.

I am on the laptop now so can't get the exact error, but it is continuous. It is worse now than before i removed the dud entries that EtreCherck showed up.

It occasionally just refuses to do anything, the mouse moves, but the rest of the system is totally frozen. No action from any where, can't force quite or do anything ..the only option is a hard 10 second power press.

Tried to boot to Safe mode, but that fails with a 'Stop' symbol where the Apple logo should be .

Tried Safe mode by entering a terminal command, from

http://www.cnet.com/news/what-to-do-when-a-mac-wont-boot-to-safe-mode/

>sudo nvram boot-args="-v -x"

I tried the s flag too to get it to boot in Single user mode.

It boots to the verbose terminal screen and a message comes up on the screen when I try to boot after using the command as above.

Could Not open file 'mach_kernel'

Error loading kernel 'mach_kernel'

The boot continues and loads in to the Recovery partition. which is where I am now, trying to a Restore from the Time Machine backup of a few days ago.

If I shut down and reboot, then it boots in to normal mode OK, but won't boot to Safe Mode

Any other suggestions before I have to do a clean install greatly appreciated. I need to find out how to migrate my Mac mail with all accounts and rules intact too. That its he difficult bit. Used to be easy in Windows and Outlook, just copy the outlook.pst file. Unfortunately Apple does not make it as easy as that. I have e-mails going back, well forever. since I first had an e-mail address, so mid to late 90's

Have seen various options to do this, but none seem perfect. All POP boxes with all mail stored locally .

Yes to AdawareMedic. last week and all clean.

Recovery mode and DU gave an error about not being able to Repair a live HDD or partition, or similar..

Tried to boot using the 'D' startup key to go to Apple Hardware Test. but that fails with a boot to a Folder icon with a question mark where the Apple logo should be.

Beginning to suspect a hard disk failure. it is a one or two year old SSD...

SMART shows OK...but ..never know.

Did a re instal to 10.9 but that was not a clean instal, It just auto imported all my old settings. I was expecting it to ask me if I wanted to use the Migration wizard or not, but it did not, it just imported everything.

So I am now doing another Time Machine restore from a month ago, instead of the more recent ones, so a restore from before I used Etre Check and Adaware.

I have the old non -SSD boot drive so I may then try a restore to that later and see what happens.

Probably longer ago than the last HDD, probably at least 3 HDD's ago.

I did try and se if a download of the system test was available, but did not find anything immediately, and did not pursue it further.

It would have been standard ' Apple recovery, ' using original factory disks and a Time Machine restore.

From what I have been reading, I should have been going with my gut instinct and how I use to always manage Windows machines...a Clean install each time. But I took advice over the years from people on here that Mac never needs clean installs and that it always looks after itself. ..WRONG!! ..oh well we live and learn !

General poor running crashes and over 830 Diag reports in log
