how to only download current year's email from server onto Mail App

So, my email is through Yahoo mail. My mail app on my macbook pro died so, I deleted my account and added it back. The issue I have now is that the mail app is trying to download emails all the way from 2009. Here is where it gets weirder. So, I go to the yahoo mail and there is no mail from 2009!!!!! Is there a way to get the mail app to only download 2014 email to current? at one point my mail app said I had 22K emails!!!!!!
