Does anyone use a ADVC-500 to Import into FCPX

I have some old vhs tapes i want to import to FCPX. my friend gave me a ADVC-500 DV Converter. FCPX Does not see it on the import screen. I know the cable is good because i use it on an old sony mini DV to capture from there. any suggestions? is there any cheap route to capture my vhs into FCPX.
