After upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS 8.2 I am unable to receive messages (both iMessages and SMS) on my Mid 2014 MacBook Pro and my phone no longer shows the text message forwarding option under settings. How can I rectify this?

Thanks for the response. I checked the link you had posted and there a few issues noted.
My iPhone and Mac both meet the system requirements.
Under iPhone settings, the first 3 points are satisfied. The 4th point:
Go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps and make sure Handoff is on
Handoff & Suggested Apps is not listed in the setting on my phone
Under Mac settings, the first 4 points are satisfied. The 5th point is:
Open the FaceTime app, go to FaceTime > Preferences and turn on “iPhone Cellular Calls.”
“iPhone Cellular Calls” is not an option listed under FaceTime Preferences.
