iTunes playlists on iPhone 6 disappeared?

All but one playlist from iPhone 6 disappeared seemingly overnight. What is the simplest way to recover them, without syncing again or resetting sync settings or replacing the whole library, etc? Maybe related: App updates only show 'open', and not 'update'. Has something funky happened with Apple?
