Spotlight works only marginally locally and it's been that way since Mavericks. Now I am on Yosemite. I can't search our networked Yosemite Server from my computer at all. This was never an issue before Mavericks.
Any ideas how to get searching to work again? It's impacted our office work tremendously.

What does that mean exactly?
I mean that it partially works on my local computer in that it doesn't always return search results that show me files that I know are there. It used to work partially searching our networked OS X server; partially meaning that it gave back some results per the search criteria, but not all (that we know are there).
Now when connecting to our sharepoint on the network and anything we attempt to search for, no results show at all for files we know are there.
I suggest you get Spotlight working on the startup volume before you start worrying about network volumes.
Rebuild the Spotlight index. If you try to search now, there will be an indication that indexing is in progress. When indexing is complete, test.

Searching still didn't work at all if I was connected to there server via SMB, HOWEVER, it did work if I connected to the server via AFP.
With SMB no matter what I searched (searching for files and folders I know are there) no results were returned.
