restore ipod shuffle 1st generation without itunes (not appearing on my mac)

USB like ipod shuffle not appearing on my Itunes. I just downloaded the latest version to date and I have a new macbook air and so i figured the problem is probably how old the device is and it is no longer compatible with the software?? I'd like to restore it in order to delete all the music on it since it is completely full but the music doesn't even show up on the finder, although when I play it when I run I can still hear all the songs...?
