performance with yosemite

I have two Mac Book Pros. One I bought in 2006 has an Intel Core Duo 1.83 GHz, 2 GB memory and is running Snow Leopard (latest release) The other I bought in early 2011, and it has Intel Core I7 2.2 GHz, 4 GB of 1333 MHz memory and is running Yosemite (latest release). The performance of the older Pro is far better than that on the newer when running the same tasks -- minimum set like Safari or Mail alone. The newer machine is slow in all accounts, all but one of which has only the apps that came with the OS.

Is Yosemite the problem? Is the newer machine underpowered to run Yosemite? Is 4 GB too little memory for Yosemite? Is there a software fix? I have repaired all permissions and checked the disc using Disc Utility. The Application Monitor shows Memory pressure low, and CPU usage low. I am only using half of the 750 GB disc.

This reminds me of Windows 98 (without all the crashes).

Thanks for any ideas.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Hi....!!

You are really running out of memory. Please upgrade the memory to at least 8 GB. Also, uninstall couple of unwanted safari extensions which also slows down your safari performance. Plus, you have got dozens of unwanted internet plug-ins which you need to uninstall.

Yosemite software is still in its developmental stages and is really not optimised for underpowered macs yet. The transparency feature of Yosemite most of the time is the main culprit in slowing down the machines and also resulting to laggy UI animations of OS X. I would recommend you to downgrade to Mountain Lion as it is a much much better and stable OS X or else if its possible to get a copy of Mavericks (If you had downloaded it before from Appstore), go to the purchase tab and download it again. Don’t worry about the security updates as those features for Mavericks and Mountain Lion are updated intermittently when required.

Your machine with 8GB of RAM or more with either Mavericks or Mountain Lion installed will be a killer machine (depending on your uses) until Yosemite is fully optimised for macs. Hope that helps.

I think you already know what the answers to those questions are.

On the bright side, you don't seem to have as many problems as many of the people who complain about Yosemite. EtreCheck will report when your machine is experiencing low memory pressure and your report does not mention that. But you had only been running for two hours when you ran EtreCheck. Perhaps if you let it run for longer and run more software, your EtreCheck report would show a more typical Yosemite low-RAM pattern.

You could try to erase the hard drive and reinstall Yosemite. Maybe do an SMC reset too. If you don't reinstall a bunch of 4 year-old software, it might have some improvement.

If you upgraded your RAM and especially replaced your hard drive with an SSD, you would notice a dramatic improvement. RAM and SSD upgrades are fairly inexpensive right now. However, I should caution you that these machines do wear out over time. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro that isn't even as fast as yours. It is maxed out with RAM and an SSD and it just about as fast as my brand new, top-of-the-line MacBook Pro. Sounds great, eh? But some of the keys, especially 's', aren't working well anymore. I can keep using it with my external keyboard as if it were a Mac mini, but I must admit the new machine is much nicer.

There may be other issues, but the LaCie software is crashing every 10 seconds and bogging down the system. Remove it. Adding more memory will have no effect on that problem, and contrary to what you've been told, 4 GB is already enough memory to run Yosemite with good performance for most purposes.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
