My Iphone 4 won't update apps????

i have had 5 apps that need updating but it did not want me to update so i deleted some of my apps,pics ect.. and now it says i to update 3 apps but every time i go to update on the apple store on my phone the apps come up saying open instead of update which it should say and it has been doing this for the last 3 days now and i just want to update my phone so i can re-download the other apps I've lost.
