How to find a certain number within only selected column (or Row)

When using Numbers '08 in a large spreadsheet, to reduce the time spent searching, and also to filter the results, I want the search to be performed only on a single column, not all all columns. How is this done? The most intuitive function for this - Edit menu > Find > Use Selection for Find - is greyed out so can't be used. Its decription in the Numbers '08 guide doesn't sound like it limits the search to the selected area anyway. Only after returning normal results is the function enabled for the cell it has found.

There must be a way, but I can't see how.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5), Number's '08 v1.0.3
