I use a mid 2012 Mac Pro; run Mavericks. I have an old Yamaha GX-50 Stereo (please see back of stereo unit, Pic 1.) Can I hook up my stereo to the AppleTV device using the "toslink optical audio cable (please see Pic 2.)," or do I need some kind of adapter?😕

to the right is speaker out for analog output
to the left is analog aux input
to use optical one would need a converter which change the digital light signal to a electrical analog signal which can
be connected to the aux input
so the converter would require active components as it would be ac powered
and there could be a delay between image and audio if the converter could not
keep up
Thank you Rudegar, for your prompt reply to my issue!!🙂 Is it possible to hook up my stereo via cables from my SONY TV, so that when ever I use the AppleTV device the stereo speakers will play the audio that is on my SONY TV? Enclosed please find Picture 2. (which is the back of my TV).😕
Your TV doesn't have an optical audio input. However the HDMI lead will carry audio so the TV - depending on how its been designed - may well pick that up when you select the HDMI input. You may be able to feed the TV's audio through to your amplifier from sockets 5 or 4.
yeah I too would suspect connecting the [5] to INPUT AUX would do what you wish to do
and if the tv have a minijack headset connector on the front a minijack to rca aux cable like this would work too

You'd need to try and see, most TV's won't convert a digital input into an analogue output.
