Restore locked HD

My wife's MacBook Pro developed a problem related to software update. Now, when she tries to restore from Time Machine, reinstall from Internet, or install from disk, her HD does not appear as a destination. Sometimes, she gets a message that her HD is locked. How can she overcome the lock?
