Textedit no save prompt after changes

I thought that if you made a change to an existing document in TextEdit and then closed the window (red button) that you would be prompted if you wanted to save the changes. Apparently not so. Just discovered that it automatically saves. And so lost the original.😟

Is there a setting anywhere to prompt 'Do you want to save' as I cannot find it. Terminal commands are fine.

TIA

Yes. System Preferences > General : Ask to keep changes when closing documents should be checked. Autosave is then disabled, and whether you click the red traffic light, or attempt to quit the application, you will receive a drop-down sheet asking for the document disposition. This will only happen it there are current document changes (red traffic light with black dot) that have not been saved.
