Strange email address associated with my apple id?

A few months ago I got an iphone5c to replace my iphone 4. I hadnt bought credit for itunes until a few days ago. This morning I tried to purchase an album but it said because this was my first time buying anything from the device I needed to prove I was the owner of my apple id by answering security questions, only I couldnt remember the answers from when I made the account so I went to change them. However they sent the vertification email to an email account I've never heard of! I didnt have a rescue email so i added one to see if i could send it to that but it was the same unknown address. I have no idea why the address is associated with my account, and i cant even contact it because most of the name is hidden. can i change the address? why is it associated with my account?
