HP CM1212nfi MFP

My printer has been attached to my iMac for almost 3 years, and working fine. Suddenly, in the process of printing a recipe from online, the printer cut out. Am unable to print even from documents stored on Word. The printer queue says the printer is paused, and the HP icon on the iMac says the printer is not connected. I have rebooted the printer and iMac several times, and still cannot print. Any ideas? When I try to print anything, the screen on the printer goes white, then blue with the HP logo, then nothing prints.

Stuart again: I also would think the printer IS connected to the iMac, because I can read the printer status on the HP director function on the computer. It tells me the status of the cartridges, and it tells me the status of the printer. So what gives?
