My late 2009 iMac keeps shutting down

Recently my iMac keeps shutting down for no reason. It is starting to happen more frequently now. Sometimes when I am working on it a window will come up and say "an error has occurred and you need to restart your computer". When I power it back up I get the option to send a report to apple because it shut down unexpectedly.

I have unplugged the power cord but that does not seem to have resolved the problem. Any other suggestions. It does not seem to be overheating as it is in a cool room, but I have noticed some louder whirring when I am on it for a while.

Any help would be appreciated.

This sounds like a Kernel Panic. Please read How to log a kernel panic and then log you KP. Once you have we can then look at the report and see if the issue is software related or not.

It also seems like this started happening when I did the most recent software update.
