Long Note truncated

i wrote a very long Note in my iPad. It saved fine. I looked at the note on my iPhone 6 Plus and edited the start, before noticing at least the final third of the note had disappeared. That version has synced to iCloud and is now on my iPad too.

is there any way to retrieve previous versions of notes? Anyone else experienced this?
