How do I prevent apps I install on my iPad from installing on my iPhone?

I just got a new iPad Air. When I started installing apps on it, they also installed themselves on my iPhone 5. How do I prevent this from happening?

iPhone 5, Other OS, iOS 8.2

Thank you Neil. I had Automatic Downloads disabled on my iPad, but not on my iPhone. Maybe that will do the trick.
