my iPhone 4s has totally frozen at the Apple screen. A hard reset does not work. It is not detected on iTunes, though curiously was detected on iPhoto.

If you cannot get passed the Apple logo on your iPhone then you may need to restore it. Take a look at the article below to walk you through putting your iPhone into recovery mode and then use iTunes to restore it. If you have a back up in iTunes or in iCloud then you can put that back on after the restore is complete.
