iMac won't boot

Hello. I got a 4-year old iMac. Stopped booting suddenly. When I press power, I hear the DVD player starting up and then nothing. No chime and screen remains off. So, the iMac's got power as evidenced by the DVD player running but it won't go any further. Tried unplugging for a while. Nothing changes. Any ideas as to what I can do to shake it off this state? Thanks. NP
