Problem setting alert sound for incoming push notification

I'm experimenting with sending push notifications (via Parse.com) to my iPhone 5s iOS8.2.

Even though I have text messages sound set to 'chord' and incoming iMessages play that, if there is an incoming push notification text message, I just get a short pulse sound. I can send along a custom alert tone--doesn't play. I can change the alert tones, no change.
