my photos/ events do not show up in iPhoto or in finder - where could they be?

I recently got a mac and i'm transferring all my photos. I've been creating events to organize the photos but many of them have suddenly disappeared and don't seem to be anywhere - not even when i search in Finder. Any suggestions?
