sync music options greyed out

Why are the options under sync music on my iTunes greyed out re: syncing with my iphone? How do I switch from "sync all music" to "sync only selected songs, etc.", which are obvious choices, if its all greyed out? Why even show it if I can't readily do it? I'm new to Apple products and it seems like some pretty basic stuff is very unnecessarily complicated here.
