Error 2 and Apple Application Support Not Found - Windows 8.1 Pro

I was unable to update iTunes when the new update came out, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. When re-installing it I received the following error:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly ‘Microsoft.VC80.CRT,type=”win32”,version=”8.0.50727.6195”,publicKeyToken=” fc8b3b9a1e18e3b”,processorArchitecture=”amd64”’. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80070422.

I click OK and the process continues until I receive the following error:

Service ‘Apple Mobile Device Service’ (Apple Mobile Device Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services. “

I ran the program as an Administrator from the start, so I do have sufficient privileges. I am given three options: Abort, Retry, and Ignore. Retry doesn’t work, so I hit ignore. The process then completes and when I try and open the program I receive the following error:

Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is requires to run iTunesHelper. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2

I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times and attempted Apple Application Support by itself by unzipping the setup. When I do that I receive the following error:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly ‘Microsoft.VC80.CRT,type=”win32”,version=”8.0.50727.6195”,publicKeyToken=” 1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b”,processorArchitecture=”amd64”’. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80070422.

I have no idea what else to try. Please help.

The response from turingtest2 is accurate, but for some people may be incomplete. Maybe this will add to it:

I had the same problem, but was able after TWO DAYS of trying to finally get the newest iTunes installed on my system. It was a nightmare. The short version is you need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable and then update it with a security update. Here is my situation:

  1. I have an old laptop, with an intel i5 450M processor and the first-generation Intel HD graphics. So, due to the naming of the "for older video cards" file, I assumed it was a video card problem. It was not.
  2. The normal 64-bit iTunes (version 12.6) would not install. I got the following error every time:
An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT.type="win32",version="8.0.50727.6195".publicKeyToken="1fc8b 3b9a1e18e3b".processorArchitecture="amd64". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0x80073715
  3. Yes, I could have installed the older 12.5.x "for older video cards" package, which DID install fine--but this was not an option for me because I needed the latest version to be compatible with my iTunes library, which I sync to my desktop. (My desktop uses 12.6 and therefore is not readable by the older version of iTunes.)

After extensive research online, I found a clue on this page:
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates

Search the page for "Microsoft.VC80.CRT" and you'll see a helpful paragraph about fixing it. It's helpful but not quite complete. Here's what I learned that you need to know:

  1. You HAVE to install the 2005 package. There are later packages out there, such as 2015; don't be confused. You need 2005. So, I downloaded and installed the Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable 32-bit version:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3387
  2. Then downloaded and installed the Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable 64-bit version:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21254
  3. I do not know whether you need both of the above. You probably only need the 64-bit one. I did both.
  4. Now that the package is installed, you have to install a security update for it, named the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update":
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26347
  5. This provides a confusing choice of three files to download. I downloaded all three, because there are NO INSTRUCTIONS to help. One, the "I64" one, did not work on my laptop because my laptop is AMD rather than Intel. But the other two installed and worked fine. One was for 32-bit and one for 64-bit. Since I installed both versions above, I installed both updates.

Now I installed the full 64-bit, up to date version of iTunes (12.6 as of the time of this writing) and it WORKED!!!!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
