How do you delete files from Macintosh HD? I cannot install a program because there is insufficient disk space?

I recently re-imported my iTunes music due to some malfunctions with my iPod. During the import, i kept getting messages saying my disk was getting full. Since my music in on an external, along with all my photos, I don't understand why the Macintosh HD was getting full. Now I can't install a new program. I'm not understanding why all the files are showing on my Mac when they are all on the external. How do I load the new program, since I can't seem to change the installation location to the external?

HELP!!

One thing that helped me reduce space was moving my photo library to an external drive

You say you reimported your iTunes music but then wonder why the files are showing up on your Mac. A bit confusing.

Where is your iTunes Media folder which contains all your music? On the external HD or in User/Home/Music/iTuneson your computer?
