I recently got mugged and lost my 2014 macbook pro, I've already activated lost mode, but a friend told me that the thief can reformat the laptop and get rid of the account its bound to. If this is the case, can Apple tell me when the serial number goes online?
No. Apple will not tell you when your MBP goes online.
Why? If it's stolen property, and they actually have the means to do it why won't they help me out?
Apple doesn't do that.
My investment was of $3,200 it's really idiotic they don't support the user. Never buying apple again.
If you paid by credit card, see if your card agreement has any provisions for reimbursement in terms of theft.

My Discover card covers theft and loss. Not sure what the max dollar amount is but its better then nothing. Most cards even have built in extended warranties and rental services etc.
Can the thief remove iCloud? Can I still track it if they manage to reformat my macbook?
