I would like to edit with media on an external hard drive without importing it, like you can do in FCP. It seems like a waste of hard drive space to copy it to another folder on the same drive, or any other drive, and I certainly don't want to edit with the media on my laptop hard drive.

This can be done by creating an iMovie Library on your external hardrive, as detailed in the article linked below.
