Both my macbookair and iphone 6 are updated to latest software and I want to use the airdrop suing these units however it seems that i cannot pair them using bluetooth.. can anyone help?

No. You can't. That is not, and never has been a feature of iOS. Why are you trying to pair them? Continuity and handoff do not require them to be paired. Just logged into the same iCloud account and in proximity with bluetooth 4.0 turned on on both devices.
