have severe conflict with microsoft word... docs not opening

have a severe conflict with microsoft word in my mac.... cannot open docs...docs can be seen in preview but cannot be opened..msg says location or filename not correct as it contains unknown extensions (><?// etc.) which is not the case as filenames do not have such extensions.. not a single document can be opened...have microsoft for mac version 2011.. tried uploading updates but not possible.
