migration assistant disaster

How can I get files from old macbook pro to new macbook pro? And how do I clean up the mess from a failed attempt?

I used Migration Assistant with USB cables (all I had). Took 7 hours. It did NOT copy files intact, but did stuff like make separate RTFD files for each page of a novel, with filenames like 3.rtf that are meaningless. Images also have meaningless filenames.

So ideally I'd like to delete ALL of that (how?) and start over. There must be a way to simply copy my files with the names I gave them, right? Also, no iTunes or iPhoto files migrated.
