Can I control stompboxes directly through the keyboard

Using Garageband as a set of software stompboxes for a guitar works great - except when it comes to turning them on and off as you play. Is it possible to setup a keyboard shortcut that directly toggles a particular stompbox in/out of the effects chain?

If not, is there another way that I can accomplish the same net effect? By this I mean, could you setup different tracks with the different combinations of effects you want and enable/disable tracks? Worst case, I suppose you could setup each transition as a new track and cycle through them, but I hope it doesn't come to this.
