When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Hi Linc Davis! Thanks for your suggestion, here's the text and it repeats multiple times:

30/03/15 6:19:18.968 pm Image Capture Extension[12126]: Unable to load nib file: MainMenu, exiting

30/03/15 6:19:18.970 pm com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2.86936[12126]) Service exited with abnormal code: 1

I now realise that this may be because I removed the image capture extension because it was taking up too much RAM in my activity monitor. (Someone had suggested it as a solution on the support community..) So any solution to this problem? Thanks!

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

Thank you! I will do that as soon as I have my backup portable disk back.

Meanwhile, this error is showing up:

31/03/15 4:22:11.926 pm Finder[202]: CGContextRestoreGState: invalid context 0x0. This is a serious error. This application, or a library it uses, is using an invalid context and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system stability and reliability. This notice is a courtesy: please fix this problem. It will become a fatal error in an upcoming update.

Seems quite serious. What can I do to fix this? and what is this error about?

Also, in the etrecheck report.. is there anything I can fix? For example, it says:

Startup Items: ℹ️

HWNetMgr: Path: /Library/StartupItems/HWNetMgr

HWPortDetect: Path: /Library/StartupItems/HWPortDetect

MobileBrServ: Path: /Library/StartupItems/MobileBrServ

Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite

If they are obsolete, should I remove them somehow?

Thanks again.
