lock symbol at the top of iPhone 6 home screen
a lock symbol has appeared at the top of my iPhone 6 home screen.Can anyone tell me what it is for and how to turn it off

It means that you have rotation lock 'on', so the phone's screen doesn't rotate when you turn it (some apps have different views depending upon whether it's in portrait or landscape) - you can turn it on/off via Control Centre (swipe of up from the bottom edge of your phone and there should be lock icon, white is 'on', black 'off')
