error 3?????

I am trying to restore and update my iphone on iTunes and its come up with an error 3. I have tried a number of times and now its telling me its an unknown iphone and the screen is showing me iTunes with the lead indicating it needs plugging in. I have done this again and its still showing error3. Should I be doing anything else? I cant use it at all now.
