backup unmounted .dmg

Is there a way with timecapsule to back up the .dmg file that is currently unmounted. I have a 5GB encrypted volume that sits on my main volume (in the documents folder) that I'd like to be able to back up each time without having to mount it. I'd like to be able to restore just the .dmg file when needed.

Right now, only the files inside the volume get backed up when it is mounted. When it is unmounted, I don't see the .dmg file in the documents folder.

Thanks!

If the .dmg file is on the drive you back up to the Time Capsule, then it is automatically backed up as a file. It doesn't need to be mounted. Have you checked Time Machine prefs to be sure it hasn't been excluded?

Thanks and that's what I thought too... no, it's not in my exclusions.

I'm going to close this question because it's not doing what I thought... I'm not sure it has anything to do with mounted vs. unmounted. When I scroll through timemachine it shows it pretty much on every other backup - meaning it's missing on 1 out of 2 backups as I scroll through. I'll do some more research but this is what I thought originally.

Here's a shot within timemachine of the backup when I didn't have the "crypto.dmg" file mounted:

but then I mounted it and ran the backup again. Now timemachine shows the .dmg file.

But now I do see it on some backups where it wasn't mounted. So, back to the drawing board!

Thanks for listening!
