Enabled family sharing. How do I back up kid's devices to master iMac?

Hello, Hoping I can get answers to my riddle.

Until yesterday we all shared one apple id for everything minus iMessage and Contacts. My kids have their own apple id. Typically we back up all devices weekly to a central iMac in case we need to restore from back-up etc.

After unauthorized purchasedson central iTunes account, we enabled family share. Today I tried to back-up one of my kids' iPads and instead of being able to back-up automatically, it tells me set the iPad as either new or restore it from an old back up.

Is my only work around to sign off my kid's apple id and sign-in with the master apple id to do this back-up?
