I have an iPad2 running iOS 8.1.3 recently backed up to iCloud.
I've decided to sell this iPad and will probably replace with newer iPad in coming months.
When I try to 'reset and delete all data' it wants to not only wipe the iPad, but all record on iCloud.
How do I delete the iPad (so I can sell it or give it away), yet still retain the backup for restore to newer iPad when I buy one?

PS reason for getting rid of this iPad2 is recent upgrade to iOS8 has slowed it down to being a brick. Call me a cynic, but I suspect this was a marketing ploy all along.

You are getting a warning that it will remove iCloud from the device, but that will not affect the backup that is stored in iCloud. You are safe to Reset all Content and Settings and remove the iCloud account from the device. Your backup will remain on iCloud.

People have had luck with:
Re-boot ipad.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears, then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. page 128 iPad user manual.
force power down if the above give you trouble.
Hold down both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button. Ten seconds or more. Hold until the Apple logo appears.

Restore to factory settings by loading the latest version of ios that your machine will support:
Do a full backup of your device. Twice is best -- cloud and computer.

rccharles, thanks - the critical step I was missing was logging out of iCloud before hitting reset.
