Hi I have a 2009 IMac and it has the latest software and a 2nd generation apple tv i can't get the mirroring to show in the menu bar

I'm afraid your iMac is too old, needs a mid 2011 iMac or newer, see:

I used to feel Apple could at least have offered a software solution for this (it uses special features of newer Intel chips to process the frames of the display to transmit to AppleTV), but it may not have given acceptable performance.
Airplay Mirroring is not perfect, and is lossy even on modern Macs - it is quite network dependent too, and will be worse with poorer connections.
All that said, you may wish to look at something like Air Parrot software which does what Apple didn;t and tries to Airplay Mirror in software.
