we have the sharing iCloud but that's only for paying apps. What do I do about the free aps.

If they are sharing the same Apple ID you will see them. Here's a neat trick: Go to Settings/iTunes & App Stores and enable Automatic Downloads. Whenever he downloads an app it will also be installed on your phone.
