I can't restore my iphone 5s

I have been trying to restore my iPhone all day because I forgot my passcode but I need to update my IOS, every time I plug it into my laptop it tells me it needs to do the update but not even half way through it stops downloading and my phone turns on. How can I restore my phone without having to use iTunes?
