Trouble with downloading

When I download something, anything for that matter, the file appears to download but it does not show up on in my download window. For example, I tried downloading the Adobe Flash upgrade. Went through the process but the file didn't show up in the Download window. Same thing with attachments on emails. I click on the attachment to open it up and I get an empty Download que. Any help figuring this will be appreciated.
