Q: I am trying to make one of my secondary emails my primary and remove my current primary.

I am trying to make one of my secondary emails my primary and remove my current primary as I am going to be closing my current primary soon to tidy up all email correspondence. The system seems to remember my secondary after I delete it and try to assign it as the primary.

    Hello abs-coffee,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

If you're unable to change your Apple ID due to the email already being a part of an Apple ID account, then I'd like you to make sure the email is not located as secondary, or the rescue email.  The rescue email can be verified in your Password and Security section of the Apple ID website after logging in.

    Take care,

    Alex H.

    Hi Alex,

I am having a similar issue.  The email address registered as my Apple id is not longer valid as i had used by work email id and i have quit my job.  I was trying to reset my Apple ID to my personal email ID which is gmail and being used as my rescue email.  To avoid confusion and administration, i have only two emails, one was my work and the other personal.  Now that i am unemployed, the work email is not valid.

To enable me to use by Apple account, is it necessary to have more than 1 email id. How do i go about resetting my Apple account.  Please help.

    Thanks

    Vanz

If the address is currently being as the rescue email address on the account then you will have to remove it from there first, which you can do by logging into the account via the 'manage your apple id' button on http://appleid.apple.com, selecting the Password & Security section of your account and answering your security questions - you will then get a screen where you can remove/change your rescue email address. You can then try putting it as your primary email address (you might have to log out and back in to do so).

If you don't have another email address that you can put as your rescue email address (you can create another free email address on http://gmail.com or http://hotmail.com) then you might (if it's available in your country) be able to switch to 2-step verification instead : Frequently asked questions about two-step verification for Apple ID - Apple Support

If you don't have access to your rescue email account (you won't be able to change it until you can answer your questions) then you will have to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

Contacting Apple about account security : Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security

If your country isn't on that page then try this form to contact Support : https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html

When they've been reset you can then update your rescue email address to an account that you have access to for potential future use : Manage your Apple ID primary, rescue, alternate, and notification email addresses
