Brand new battery with only three cycles, 3539 charge remaining, voltage (mv) 12354,
condition says check battery, icon says service battery, and I did the re-calibration, and SMC drill.
Battery seems to hold a charge and recharges ok. Macbook 2008 aluminum.
What's going on?

Try resetting the PRAM -> OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
If it does not work, remember that the battery comes with a 30-day warranty, so you can get it replaced for free.

It's been my experience that when it comes to macbook batteries you get what you pay for. OWC sells a solid line of batteries with a guarentee http://eshop.macsales.com/ There are many counterfeit batteries on the internet, if you bought from an auction site for a ridiculously low price you've likely just got a junk battery.

Replace it with a genuine Apple part.
You have discovered why trying to get it cheap is a bad idea. Return it. Then make an appointment at the genius bar and see if Apple will replace your original battery with a new one. I'm not sure if they will or not once you attempted to do so yourself.
