Add LOTS of light to your subject. See Apple's suggestions:

  • iMac with built-in iSight camera: Positioning the display when using the built-in iSight - Apple Support

  • Use good lighting for the best iSight picture - Apple Support

(Note that "good" means "BRIGHT, single source" light in this context.)

The alternative for adequate lighting is a third-party add-on software app such as iGlasses, Webcam Settings, or Sight Control that allow you to manually adjust exposure (and some other camera parameters.) The image quality will not be as good as you will get with adequate light. Only you can decide whether the quality is adequate for your circumstances. (iGlasses offers a free trial so you can decide before you buy.)
