what are the circles with red or grey plus signs

My Ipad 2 will not sync. I have a circle with a red plus sign next to each song, when you click on it , it goes grey and nothing happens.I am unable to play any music on the lists, I have the latest version installed 8.2 and Itunes 12.1. Everything seems to sync and appear on Ipad but nothing plays HELP !!!!
