what is "other"

every time i sync my iPhone to iTunes it shows the other bar in the summary which every time i sync it keeps getting bigger and has now got to the point where its taking up my phone! does anyone know how to remove it or at least make it smaller as my phone has not enough space to store the rest of my contents such as apps and music.
